What begins as a sniff, a puff, a drag, a swig, a morsel, a splurge, or a fling can spiral into something beyond the control of a person, and before he realizes it, he’s addicted. The ways in which these effects manifest themselves can turn out to be disastrous because of the extremely sensitive nature of the problem.. The thing about addiction and relationships is that both sides can be equally tormented, confused, and helpless. Whatever the situation, the bottom line is that deterioration of relationships is collateral to any kind of addiction. It affects every person: the spouse/partner, family, friends, colleagues, superiors, and even random people they meet everyday. Addiction brings with it only detriment. Some may try to understand the addiction, some give up after a while, and some hang on till the end, willing their way through the ordeal of helping an addict get his life back
Of those, 5.5 million attend in person and exactly half of those attendees are women.
PBR’s own description of bull riding begins, “Buckle up. “To maximize sales, you want to connect with both the purchaser as well as the purchase-influencer.”
Turns out he’s right. “Our TV ratings are skewing higher on the female side.”
Of the attendees, 63 percent are between the ages of 25 and 54, according to the PRCA, which sounds an awful lot like mom-country.
CAMPBELL SUED OVER HEART-HEALTHY LABEL
“Mom and her family are the focal point of our Tyson-branded advertising, messaging and product innovation,” Tyson spokesman Worth Sparkman said in a statement, “and there are a lot of moms who watch PBR events.”
The company has agreed to be a sponsor of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) championships later this month in Las Vegas, including a bull-riding fan expo at Mandalay Bay Resort.
Meaning: Even if mom couldn’t give a hoof about bull riding, her son or husband might, and, to keep that influencer happy, she might buy him Tyson.
RODEO BULL RUNS LOSE AT PENNSYLVANIA FAIR
Becher explained why the link-up makes sense, whether or not mom is bull-crazy. According to market research commissioned by PBR, some 25 million fans follow bull riding. Tyson Foods has found a novel way to reach America’s moms: through bull riding.
Through bull riding, Tyson said it hopes to reach moms much the same way Campbell Soup has reached them through Campbell’s partnership with the National Football League. This is bull riding, and the first rule is just to stay alive.”
“It’s funny,” Muirheid told ABC News. “Tough-guy food for a tough-guy sport,” he called it.
. Lauderdale, sees the PBR-Tyson matchup as a marriage made in heaven. Asked what might be the appeal of bull riding to women, let alone moms, Denise Abbott, a spokesman for PBR, noted that PBR’s market research didn’t ask fans, male or female, why they like the sport.
Scott Becher, an expert on sports sponsorship and managing director of Z Sports and Entertainment, a division of Zimmerman Advertising in Ft. We don’t rope calves, and we don’t chase barrels. This is not a rodeo. Of those, 43 percent are women. Campbell TV commercials showcase moms of famous players.
Yes, but how about for non-tough-guy moms?
Sara Muirheid, director of sales, marketing and broadcast properties for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), has numbers that back up PBR’s: Rodeos have a fan base of 31 million, she said. “The name of the game is incremental sales at retail,” he said
“I’m saying it’s bad for college football. There needs to be somebody who looks out for what’s best for the game, not the SEC or the Big Ten or Jim Harbaugh. But what’s best for the game of college football.
Among other topics Saban touched upon Tuesday, he said he would like to see underclassmen who leave school early have the option of returning after testing their prospects for the NFL draft, similar to what happens in college basketball.
“All the people that say this is creating opportunities for kids, this is all about recruiting,” Saban said. We have to worry about our players doing the right things with the limited time we have them, but we’re not going to do that because we have to be somewhere else to see someone else.”. “It’s as good of [high school] football as there is in the country.”
McElwain obviously would prefer that other schools didn’t recruit in Florida, but he knows that’s not realistic.
“Until this satellite camp issue came up, you still had to go to the high school, go through the coach, and players came to your camp if they were interested in learning,” Saban said.
“If you ask the NFL, ‘How can we maintain trust with our players when you’re giving us inaccurate information?’ their response is, ‘We don’t know enough about the guys to really give you the information, because all we can really go on is film evaluation,’” Saban said at the SEC annual meetings. It’s happening outside the normal evaluation window, which means we’re taking time away from our players. “By doing what we’re doing now, we’re doing what we do in every other sport that we’re complaining about every day — AAU basketball and all this.
MIRAMAR BEACH, Florida — Alabama coach Nick Saban made one thing crystal clear Tuesday at the SEC spring meetings: He is not a fan of satellite camps.
Saban has the opposite viewpoint on satellite camps as Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who has embraced them like no other coach.
“Creating all these third parties. We want accurate information when that’s all said and done in December.”
Saban has never been a fan of satellite camps, characterizing them as “ridiculous.”
The SEC had banned its coaches from participating in satellite camps, and the NCAA followed with a satellite-camp ban. “I’m not into politics.”
Saban blasted satellite camps because they incorporate third parties into recruiting and there aren’t any guidelines.
“It’s bad for college football,” Saban said.
“They should come [to Florida],” McElwain said. What do they do with the money? And who makes sure the kid paid to go to camp?
After initially saying he would not discuss satellite camps, Saban went off in a five-minute rant that would have made Howard Beale proud, comparing the satellite camps to “the wild, wild West.”
“I’m not blaming Jim Harbaugh,” Saban said. And who gets exposed on that? I go to a camp and talk to some guy I don’t know from Adam’s house cat, and he’s representing some kid cause he’s putting a camp on, and then I’m in trouble for talking to this guy.”
Florida coach Jim McElwain has a unique perspective because 10 of the SEC’s other 13 schools participate in satellite camps in the Sunshine State.
Saban was asked whom he would want as commissioner.
Under current NCAA rules, once underclassmen declare for the NFL draft, they lose their remaining eligibility.
Saban also questioned who keeps track of whether players paid for the camps and what, if any, compliance people are involved.
“This is the wild, wild West at its best. However, in April the NCAA overturned the ban and ruled that satellite camps would be allowed.
“Someone sponsors the camp, they pay them the money. “That’s why we have a combine and all these other things. Harbaugh can do whatever he wants to do if he thinks that’s what’s best. If they have a prospect, they can have a camp. There have been no specific guidelines relative to how we’re managing control of this stuff. The integrity of the game.
“Anybody can have a camp now. “That’s what it’s about.
“The coaches, players and people who play it. It would be similar to pro days for juniors and seniors and would allow NFL scouts to better evaluate those players.
“I don’t have a candidate,” Saban said. Then you’re expected to go to that camp and they can use you to promote their camp because Ohio State is coming, Alabama is coming, whoever else is coming.
“Why should we be promoting anybody else’s camp anywhere? All we’re doing is allowing all these other people that we spend all of our time at the NCAA saying you can’t recruit through a third-party person, and that’s exactly what you’re doing.
Saban and Arkansas’ Bret Bielema believe a combine for underclassmen could help solve the problem. Now who does that? Now because we have the Power 5, everyone is doing what they want. There needs to be a [college football] commissioner.”
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. That’s bigger than all this
In a recent unscientific sampling of readers’ views on The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Web site that included 5,000 responses, 89 percent said Rose should be allowed in the Hall of Fame. “But if you robbed a bank, you still robbed a bank. The same poll showed that support for Rose’s Hall of Fame eligibility has not changed in 20 years — 60 percent favor it; 35 percent are opposed.
“Not a single fact has ever been challenged,” Vincent said. For every player that thinks Rose should be reinstated, there are 10 that don’t.”
At first, many observers thought those remarks were a big move in favor of Rose, as Aaron is a longtime friend of MLB Commissioner Bud Selig. Vincent took over as commissioner, and he said he never saw any signs of change or remorse from Rose.
“If you talk to some of the Hall of Famers, like Bob Feller and others, they would never go for that. Like Aaron, both are on the Hall of Fame’s Veterans Committee. An owner of Philadelphia bet on baseball, the 1919 White Sox, you name it. But he isn’t going to get his way on the Hall of Fame anytime soon and may never find the road leading there.
“He and his lawyers said all kinds of things about Bart Giamatti, claiming Bart was biased and all,” Vincent said. He was very defiant then, and he made it more difficult for himself.”
“I understood very quickly Rose had no intention of making changes,” Vincent said. Rose and attorneys who once represented him did not return calls and e-mails for comment. He was banned for life, and that should be the last line of his career.”
Giamatti died eight days after banishing Rose. Some people tried to write books on it and couldn’t because it didn’t miss a thing.”
Vincent, who talked to CNN.com from his summer home in Williamstown, Massachusetts, wrote the agreement in 1989. His hitting accomplishments and some artifacts are a part of the sport’s timeline there, but so is his lifetime suspension.. “The proper course for Pete would be to say then, ‘I’m sorry, I want to help you, I want to help baseball.’ But he never did that, of course.
Schmidt points to baseball’s current steroids scandal as another reason for Rose’s ban to be lifted.
Vincent recalled a conversation he had with Hall of Famer Tom Seaver.
“Is this the way Bart Giamatti would have wanted it 20 years later?” Schmidt asked.
Schmidt maintains Giamatti was the only man who could broker Rose back into the sport’s good graces: “Giamatti was a compassionate man who would have eventually met with him, laid out a lifestyle plan that Pete would follow, and today he’d be a forgiven member of baseball’s family.”
Last month, it took one comment about baseball’s hit king from baseball’s former home run king to reignite the controversy.
And the Dowd Report, baseball’s 225-page account of the investigation of Rose’s gambling activities — including bank and telephone records, Rose’s betting slips and witness testimony — has stood the test of time.
Giamatti’s successor, Vincent, said Rose prevented himself from ever getting considered for a possible return to baseball.
“Sometimes Henry wants to be likable and is kind to some people,” Bisher said.
Schmidt is one of the few Rose supporters who will publicly say baseball should lift the ban. I had dinner with the commissioner Sunday, and he didn’t like it.”
This weekend, another friend, Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, went to Rose’s defense, in a column he wrote for The Associated Press.
All About Pete Rose o Major League Baseball o Cincinnati Reds o Hank Aaron
Bisher, who has covered Aaron his whole career, said he “couldn’t believe Aaron said it.”
Aaron’s and Schmidt’s comments may be the last talk of Rose entering the Hall of Fame anytime soon, especially during the reign of Selig, who has a contract as commissioner through 2012.
Rose isn’t entirely missing from the Hall of Fame. “He never acknowledged he had a gambling problem. Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller later told the San Francisco Chronicle, “I heard what Hank Aaron said about it, and that’s a cockamamie idea. but as a history museum, we do have the responsibility to tell the history of baseball. This weekend, for the second time in the past month, an Enquirer columnist wrote that it is time to forgive Rose.
Selig said then, “I would remind you that Pete Rose admitted to gambling on baseball and agreed to a lifetime ban.” He added the case is always under review, but nothing has changed.
He has a message for his fans on his Web site: “I begrudgingly do not have any positive new updates as it relates to my quest for official re-instatement back into Major League Baseball.”
A USA Today/Gallup poll released this week showed that 75 percent of more than 1,000 Americans surveyed think that player use of performance-enhancing drugs is more serious than Rose’s offense. It was signed by then-MLB Commissioner A. He is the only player in MLB history to play more than 500 games at five different positions, and he played in more wins than any player in history.
One of the roads buffering the Great American Ballpark, the current home of the Reds, is Pete Rose’s Way, and it was there back when he was playing near the same site, at Riverfront Stadium. No matter if it’s a third-base coach or an all-star, Hall of Fame-type player,” said Faye Vincent, who was MLB deputy commissioner at the time baseball investigated Rose for betting on his team.
Rose didn’t publicly admit the betting until this decade. We do say Pete was banned from baseball for gambling in that timeline.”
On Monday, 20 years to the day Pete Rose signed an agreement with Major League Baseball banning him from the sport, he is no closer to being reinstated.
“I would certainly like to see him in,” Hank Aaron told reporters at baseball’s Hall of Fame festivities. Rose’s ex-teammates Tony Perez and Joe Morgan did not return calls and e-mails. So are Don Sutton, Phil Niekro and Tony Gwynn, who would not comment on Rose’s status.
“I think Bart Giamatti handled it beautifully. “The case was so overwhelming, and it had so much. He makes a living making public appearances and signing autographs, through his Web site and at one of the shopping malls at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.
When he did admit to betting on baseball in his 2004 book, he was back in Cooperstown on the weekend of inductions, signing copies.
Rose holds 19 MLB records, including most career hits, 4,256. On the weekend of baseball Hall of Fame inductions in Cooperstown, New York, he often held autograph sessions at a nearby bookstore, rankling the Hall of Famers who played before Rose. If you didn’t do that, we would all bet on baseball.’ “
“Bart and I told him about reconfiguring his life, and that’s the sad part. From the time of the ban until 2004, he publicly insisted he didn’t bet on baseball.
In that agreement, Rose, accused of betting on MLB games while he managed the Cincinnati Reds, was “declared permanently ineligible in accordance with Major League Rule 21.”
“Tom Seaver once asked me, ‘If I’m a Hall of Famer, and I bet on baseball, do I get the same treatment?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ Tom said, ‘I get it. “He belongs in, really.”
“He has his fans in Cincinnati, no doubt; he has people who want to forgive him,” said Bisher, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist. Baseball’s history, Rose’s lying about his gambling and his brash nature in handling the manner have all painted him into this corner, with no apparent way out.
“Many artifacts donated by him are on display,” said Brad Horn, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s senior director for communications and education. I don’t think to this day he ever recognized he had a problem.”
As long as Pete Rose is banned from baseball, he will be banned from any Hall of Fame ballot.
“Some other players like Mike Schmidt, from time to time, come out and comment that it is time for Pete Rose to be reinstated,” Vincent said. “But when you talk to players, they seldom see the universe the way a commissioner sees it. There is no possible way they can retract what was done,” said Furman Bisher, longtime columnist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a voting member of the Hall of Fame’s Pre-1943 Veterans Committee. It’s done, and nothing you do can change that.”
Rose made matters worse as the years went on. “Every club has it as you walk into their clubhouse in big letters: No gambling.
“Nobody who has ever been thrown out of baseball has ever been reinstated. Bob Feller has said to me before, ‘If Pete Rose is allowed in the Hall of Fame, I’ll never come back,’ ” Vincent said.
Rose does have hometown support. “As a history museum that tracks the game’s greatest moments, Pete is noted several times in the museum’s timeline … Bartlett Giamatti, Rose and his attorneys, and Vincent.
(CNN) — It’s one of the great ironies in all of sports: Pro baseball’s career hitting leader is not in baseball’s Hall of Fame.
When contacted, a spokesman for Selig said, “The commissioner stands by his comments to reporters he made during [last month's] Hall of Fame weekend, as judge and jury on this.”
“Which is worse? Does the penalty fit the crime?” Schmidt wrote.
“I think the door is closed
However, we’ve clearly seen the high end of this Packers team over the previous two seasons as an offensive machine and a capable defense. But the talent is there to take a flier.
Other potential future-book plays
Cincinnati Bengals over 9.5 (EVEN)
The Bills did thrive on the offensive side last season, as offensive coordinator Greg Roman did an incredible job with quarterback Tyrod Taylor & Co. The Bears and Lions continue to erode, while the Vikings obviously lose some luster with the loss of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Basically, it comes down to believing we’re much more likely to see 6 wins (and a winning ticket) as opposed to 8.
Denver Broncos (25-1)
After Super Bowl 50, the Houston Texans were my choice for best value play out of the AFC at 40-1. Tony Romo got hurt again and the Cowboys’ odds were raised, but there is hope, as he’s projected to miss six to 10 weeks, and rookie Dak Prescott stepped up in the preseason. Ryan is known for his defensive prowess, but the Bills dropped from fourth in yards allowed in 2014 to 19th in 2015. The first 10 games will test the mettle of Ryan & Co.
Atlanta Falcons (80-1)
Arizona’s brilliant head coach Bruce Arians continues to preach it’s all about getting that ring on your finger, and his team is as well-rounded as any to deliver the title this season. The better play now is Cincinnati at 20-1, as the Bengals have one of the best all-around teams with a balanced offense and a solid bend-but-don’t-break defense. Of course, there are two big obstacles for the Bengals: First, they really need to hold off the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North and secure a first-round bye. We saw how they looked in their 5-0 start last season, when Matt Ryan and Julio Jones looked unstoppable and Devonta Freeman emerged as a scoring machine — and they were the only team to beat Carolina in the regular season. Forever the extreme eternal optimist, Ryan’s Bills generally failed to deliver last season, especially on the defensive side of the football. Their offensive line, receivers and quarterback certainly rank in the upper echelon of the NFL. After Philadelphia traded away Sam Bradford, this number has been raised to 8.5, and I believe that’s an over-adjustment — so I now like the under 8.5 (and ESPN’s Football Power Index and our Money Line Estimate agree as they’re still right around 8 wins). The schedule is tough and front-weighted. 4 defense with Fitzpatrick leading an already-balanced offense that adds running back Matt Forte. I don’t believe the Jets can catch the Patriots, but for this bet they just need to finish over .500 again.
Offensively, the Cardinals continue to be sound at all levels. Head coach Dan Quinn, who built the Seattle Seahawks’ defense before taking this job, obviously still has a lot of work to do with the defense, but that’s why we’re getting such a great price. They just need to keep doing what they’re doing in the regular season, and I don’t see too much of a falloff from the team that finished 12-4 a year ago. Yes, the schedule lightens up after that, but Ryan might have one foot out the door.
Tuley: Teams I love (to bet on) Tuley: Teams I love (to fade) Tuley’s totals: Best over/under teams. They added defensive leader Eric Weddle to their defensive backfield, and were able to add the No. The market hasn’t agreed, as the Falcons drifted all the way up to 100-1 before dipping back to 80-1 over Labor Day weekend. The Jets were 10-6 last year and had the No. Note the Cardinals struggled in both their red zone offense and defense last season, as this team is far too talented for those trends not to turn around. Well, the oddsmakers obviously felt all along that he would return to the fold as the odds didn’t budge. And while defenses can still win championships, like we saw last year with Denver, it’s not a necessity in today’s NFL.
New York Jets over 8 ( 150)
Note: I still like the Houston Texans over 8.5 (-120), but not as much as I did when I got over 8 over the summer (though it still takes 9 wins to cash), so that’s why it didn’t make my list of top “over” bets. Unfortunately, they’ve lost the services of difference-maker Marcell Dareus for the first four games. with trips to Baltimore, New England, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle and Cincinnati, while garnering the Jets, Arizona and New England at home. They’ll most likely catch the Cowboys without Tony Romo. Nelson is back this season, while the signing of Jared Cook gives Rodgers another weapon.
Cincinnati Bengals (20-1)
Again, we don’t need the Bengals to erase their playoff demons to cash this bet. Importantly, the Cardinals can move forward from last year. In proper Ryan-like fashion, the Bills also led the NFL in penalties last year. Obviously we can’t have the Chiefs going on another 10-game winning streak, but that was a bit of a fluke, and no one’s going to be looking past them this year.
Under the leadership of John Harbaugh and Ozzie Newsome, the Ravens have been a threat every season to reach the Super Bowl. Secondly, and ultimately the biggest hurdle, is they have to win three playoff games in a row (four if they don’t get a first-round bye), and head coach Marvin Lewis is 0-7 in the playoffs and 0-4 with Andy Dalton as the starting QB. They eventually placed 20 players on injured reserve, including eight projected starters — Suggs, Joe Flacco, Justin Forsett and Steve Smith included. Besides, the encouraging number is the 12 games that the Bengals are expected to be favored in this year. However, after ranking 12th in points per game and sixth in yards per play, expect the league to adjust and regression to occur. The Cardinals are poised and motivated for the NFL title.
Green Bay Packers over 10.5 (-170)
New Orleans Saints under 7 (-140)
Opening week last year, the Ravens lost defensive force and team leader? Terrell Suggs — and quite simply, it was all downhill from there. However, this team peaked early, and eventually the preseason loss of wide receiver Jordy Nelson reared its ugly head along with subpar offensive line play. The FPI at 9.3 and MLE at 9.4 slightly agree, though it is a little concerning that they’re only clear underdogs in just four games (how they fare in the four pick ‘em games will tell the tale). Best future bets, season win total bets, teams to bet on and against — it’s all here in Chalk’s 2016 pro football betting guide. ESPN Chalk’s NFL Vegas experts, Dave Tuley and Erin Rynning, combine to bring you the ultimate betting guide for 2016. They don’t need to win them all to get over the total and, even if they don’t win them all, I give them a decent shot to win some of the rare games where they’ll be underdogs or pick ‘em.
Minnesota Vikings (20-1)
Baltimore Ravens (15-1 to win AFC)
It’s not often you get 25-1 on the defending champions. And finally, their road schedule is void of high-caliber competition in Jacksonville, Atlanta, Tennessee, Washington, Philadelphia and their division rivals. They jumped to 6-0 record before their bye week, outscoring the opposition 164-101. Before last season, Harbaugh owned a 72-38 regular-season NFL record as head coach, plus 10-5 in the postseason. 6 overall draft choice, left tackle Ronnie Stanley. A potential Super Bowl game was promising last season before their collapse in Carolina to end the year after an impeccable 13-3 regular season. In addition, they were minus-15 in turnovers and nine of their 11 losses were within eight points as seemingly nothing went right. Importantly, the key injured cogs from last year are back. I still like them, but the “value” part isn’t quite there anymore at 14-1. They’re still the best value bet on the board in my opinion. So, I actually think now that the value is on the over 8, especially at the current 150 price. The loss of Tyrann Mathieu was devastating for this group late last season, as he works himself to 100 percent by this season’s end.
Arizona Cardinals (8-1)
I originally had a lean on the Chiefs under 9 back in the spring, so I really like it now that it has been bet up to 9.5 (and 120 to boot!). If you don’t mind giving up the insurance of a push on 7, there are some books that have over 7.5 at plus-money, and even if they don’t live up to my lofty expectations, I don’t think they’ll be worse than a .500 team and get at least the 8 wins needed to cash this bet.
Yes, there’s a trend here with finding value on teams with QB issues. ESPN’s Football Power Index has this total pushing with exactly 7 wins, but I like that the Saints are only projected to be favored in six games at CG Technology, plus the Money Line Estimate only adds up to 6.4 wins. Note that with the top AFC teams expected down compared to the Cardinals, Packers, Panthers and Seahawks, the key is to bet the Ravens to win their conference.
New York Giants under 8.5 (-120)
If I like the Falcons to go to the playoffs (and especially to make a Super Bowl run), then I must love the over 7 at -130. The W/L/T that we used in our betting previews for each team and used CG Technology’s Week 1-16 lines to see how many times a team is expected to be favored has the Giants favored in only 8 games, so they would almost have to win all of those (plus any upsets) to get over 8.5.
The season is finally upon us.
The question lingers as to whether Rex and his brother Rob Ryan turn this defense around. They did lose defensive tackle Kyle Williams early in the season, but a defensive mastermind like Ryan should be capable of working around a key injury.
After Super Bowl 50, I made the Falcons my best value bet for Super Bowl LI at 40-1. Note that this offense actually led the league last year in three-and-outs at 28 percent.
New York Giants Chicago Bears New Orleans Saints Arizona Cardinals Pittsburgh Steelers Jacksonville Jaguars
Kansas City Chiefs under 9.5 ( 120)
Vital when handicapping over/under season wins is the schedule, and the Packers’ slate is relatively smooth sailing. Yes, this is a tall win projection, but the Packers are a heavy hitter and the schedule is as soft as a pillow.
Dallas Cowboys (25-1)
Buffalo Bills under 8 (-150)
Atlanta Falcons over 7 (-130)
The Giants’ over/under was at 8 with added juice most of the summer, and it was a pass for me. However, it’s easy to flush last season down the drain and move forward with this rock-solid organization.
If only the Las Vegas oddsmakers would buy into the promises of Bills coach Rex Ryan. They’ve fortified their defensive line with the additions of Chandler Jones and top draft choice Robert Nkemdiche to aid in the all-important NFL pressuring of the quarterback. In addition, their top draft choice, Shaq Lawson, might be back from injury in November and second-rounder Reggie Ragland is already done for the season. Peyton Manning is gone, of course, but if Trevor Siemian can run the offense — which relied more on the running game last year anyway — the defense can carry this team far.
I had a lean on the Jets under 8 back in April, but that was when Ryan Fitzpatrick was holding out, and I expected the number to go higher if he signed. If Prescott can keep Dallas in contention and Romo returns healthy, the 25-1 price could be an overlay — as long as Romo can stay healthy the rest of the way, which is asking a lot.
After the schedules came out in April, I made the Saints’ under 6.5 ( 115) one of my best bets, so I like under 7 even better, though the juice is heavy at -140.

You have to believe that Sam Bradford puts them back on track, and you have to not worry about not pulling the trigger when you could have had 30-1 when Shaun Hill was expected to be the starter.
Led by Aaron Rodgers, the Packers loomed especially large the first six weeks of last season. Importantly, the huge emergence of running back David Johnson is the catalyst to take the pressure off the deep passing game. Look for the Ravens to return to their physical ways with a chance to match any AFC contender

The best simulations do not focus on graphics at all. Strategy focuses on the gamer calling formations and various plays. The game features a number of options that allows players to simulate seasons and more. These are known generally as text-based simulations. The Madden games feature realistic graphics and fun gameplay, but some football enthusiasts prefer games that focus more on simulating actual NFL football games.
There are several other simulations available, including the following:
This simulation has been around since the days of DOS, and gameplay is largely the same as it was 20 years ago. The database of players dates back to the 1950s, so players can also simulate historical seasons.
This game features both a professional version and a college version. Later editions added the ability to call plays, but the game’s main focus has been on the front office aspects (hence, the name).. Older versions of the game tended to get hampered by flaws in the interface, but the newer versions of the game have improved these flaws and shortcomings.
This is the newest game on the list, and it has promise. Some are purchased and downloaded, while others are played online. Players can simulate individual games as well as entire seasons or multiple seasons. The list below features five of the best simulation games.

When it comes to modern football video games, nothing compares in popularity with the Madden series produced by EA Sports. The game has gone through many enhancements focusing in both general management aspects of gameplay as well as the simulation part of the football games themselves. Action! The nicest thing about being champ, he said, “is that people like you.” Everyone but boxing experts, who found Rocky’s style too crude to suffer. Ali complained about his ‘loss’, alleging the computer was made in Alabama.
He was born Rocco Francis Marchegiano (Mark a-jahn-o) on September 1, 1923, the second son (the first died shortly after childbirth) of Pierino and Lena Marchegiano, first generation Italian immigrants who came to America after the first World War. Rocco inherited his father’s toughness, for he survived a deadly bout of pneumonia when he was two. She and her friends prayed the Rosary at the child’s bedside and waited. He would interrupt his training schedule to attend Mass. There was bad weather and the plane ran low on gas. He boarded a small, single engine Cessna. Anthony for her son’s recovery, promising to give up her diamond engagement ring if Rocco recovered. Rocky hadn’t fought or trained for fourteen years. She smoked too, and developed a glandular problem. He was a near-classic example of the triumph of classic virtues (Boston Herald Traveler, September, 1969).”
Not that there is anything particularly Catholic about being a teetotaler. It’s just that Marciano, though intelligent, was a very simple man who never forgot where he came from. Yet he used a wire to try to get coins back he used to make telephone calls. He made sure the people who invited him paid for everything.. The champion was Jersey Joe Walcott, a ring veteran most experts picked to beat Marciano easily. Walcott bounced off and threw a hard left hand. Ali later said that Marciano punched so hard he was sore for days after. His friends said the only thing Rocky was afraid of was being poor. They had one daughter, but Barbara miscarried when Rocky was away, and wasn’t able to have any more children, although the two did adopt a boy (Rocky Jr.). When he wasn’t playing sports he was running and exercising.
Far behind on points late in the fight, Rocky needed a knockout to win. He was invited to the White House to meet the President. Rocky kept coming, even after Walcott knocked him down, closed his left eye, and opened cuts on his face that required fourteen stitches to close.
The doctor was wrong. Yet even after he had enough money Rocky went after more. Or the estrangement may have developed over Rocky’s running, which may have sprung from a preoccupation with money. It was an incredible run. The pilot had not flown at night before, became confused by the bad weather, and attempted to land in a field rather than the Newton airport.
Marciano died without a will. Even as champion he came to the ring in a robe bearing the colors of BrocktonHigh School (even though he dropped out in the tenth grade). Marciano went back into training and bought a toupee. Asked about his reaction when flying shrapnel hit his jaw and snapped off some teeth, Pierino replied, “I just spit them out and kept coming.”
He and Lena settled in Brockton, a small city twenty miles south of Boston. One sportswriter said Marciano brought the “austere, sackcloth-and -ashes approach of a monk” to his training. Walcott collapsed to the canvas and was counted out. On those occasions Rocco reached opponents with his right hand, however, they fell down and didn’t get up.
Outwardly Marciano’s life after boxing was quite successful – unlike many fighters, he kept his money and his wits. Until Rocco put Brockton on the national map, his hometown was best known for its shoe factories. His marriage was strained. Rocky always apologized, but the fouling continued.
Rocky ran from an early age. He said if the man died he would quit fighting. Although he left thousands (some claim hundred of thousands) of dollars stashed away or buried underground, none of it was found to aid Barbara and the children, who were impoverished after Rocky’s death.
Marciano’s character was on display in his first fight with Walcott, which was a classic. Anthony before his first title fight, read The Confessions of St. The man recovered, but never fought again.
(An experiment was performed on Rocky’s punching power. Augustine before defending his title, and said: “The biggest thrill I could think of would be an audience with the pope?”
His upbringing was steeped in Italian customs and traditions. Jude’s oil while in his corner waiting for the start of that fight.
Which heavyweight boxing champion in the last century knelt on his knees to pray to St. He golfed with priests, helped promote parish functions, even lunched with Cardinal Spellman. Life magazine called him “pure of speech” and “a clean living boy.” He was elsewhere described as “astonishingly innocent,” and “totally without deception, totally without guile.” He didn’t drink or smoke; in fact, when a host at a party for Marciano in Brockton offered the champ a drink, Rocky replied, “If you don’t mind, I’ll take an apple.”
In 1976 Sylvester Stallone began his “Rocky” franchise. After the Rock retired he kept running.
Maybe Rocky ran to avoid an estranged relationship with Barbara. Skehan, Rocky Marciano, Biography of a First Son, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1977.
As he continued to successfully defend his title, Marciano gradually drew respect from critics. At the last minute Rocky decided to squeeze in an appearance at a steak house in Des Moines, Iowa. The people of the world should be informed of this boy’s character and personality.”
Rocky’s last big payday was a computerized fight with Muhammed Ali in 1969. Rocky Marciano was champion.
Rocky was an old school Catholic. The sparring film would be spliced together to match the computer outcome of the fight – a closely guarded secret that would not be revealed until “The Superfight” aired in theaters.
He rarely saw his wife and children; or his parents, brothers, and sisters. It hit Walcott’s jaw with the sound of a baseball bat. His wife, Barbara, was unable to have the large family Rocky wanted. Marciano stepped inside and beat Walcott to the punch with a short right hand that traveled maybe eight inches. Then he was cut from the Chicago Cubs farm system. Rocco refused but eventually he tired of having his name misspelled and mispronounced, and allowed his name to be shortened to Rocky Marciano. He retained his public life, crisscrossing across the country to give speeches, participate in benefits, and conduct business. He hit his opponents on the break, after the bell, and below the belt. He usually didn’t pay anything for his cross-country trips: no plane fare, hotel fare, or meals. He knocked out nine of his early opponents in the first round. Before the fight Marciano met with a priest, who after their meeting said: “That boy is no ordinary prizefighter, he is one of the most dignified, straightforward people I have ever met in my life. And Brockton loved him right back, at least in part because many of them became rich betting on Rocky’s fights.
After knocking out an old Joe Louis, Rocky got a title shot. Rocky seemed too busy to be home.
Everett M. It is difficult to win a fight when you can’t reach your opponent. A few minutes later she came out complaining: “What is he, crazy? He didn’t want anything to do with me.” Marciano seemed more comfortable in the company of clergy than actresses. He would never be a classic boxer, but he worked unceasingly at improving his craft, and trained relentlessly. Marciano spent hours at his opponent’s hospital bed, and in church praying for the man’s life. Ali was in retirement too, after having his title stripped for refusing the draft. Rocco’s biggest limitation was arms so short they were almost stubby. Walcott’s experience kept Marciano off-balance and sometimes made him look ridiculous. Once he hit a man so hard he almost killed him. Several opponents quit boxing after being knocked out by Marciano. Barbara missed Rocky, and drank too much. The pilot landed the plane in a field in Newton, Iowa, and rammed into a lone tree in the middle of the field. Rocky never wrote anything down, he tried to keep track of his loans in his head, and sometimes forgot who owed him, and how much. Yet his retirement years revealed a man who seemed simple, but often was not.
An investigation into the crash of the Cessna in NewtonIowa cited pilot inexperience as the cause of the crash. There would be good food, a nice check for a few words, and still enough time to fly back for his birthday. He was awkward in the ring. Rocco slept in the living room with the windows open, even in the winter, as if in defiance of his bout with pneumonia.
Russell Sullivan, Rocky Marciano, The Rock of His Times, 2002, University of Illinois Press, Urbana and Chicago.
After serving as a GI in World War II, Rocco played minor league baseball. An obituary in his home state of Massachusetts read:
Rocky was generous with people who were down and out, often giving them unsecured loans that were rarely paid back. Marciano’s body was found pinned beneath the wreckage. Rocky was a brawler. The Marchegiano’s had five more children after Rocco: Alice, Connie, Elizabeth, Louis, and Peter. * * *
Five months after Marciano’s death “The Superfight” debuted in theaters. Then Rocky and Ali sparred 70 rounds for the camera, simulating different endings to the fight. He was undersized for a heavyweight. At the time many children died of pneumonia, but Rocco eventually recovered, and Lena kept her promise.
While sportswriters criticized Marciano’s boxing shortcomings, no one criticized his character, as the following quotes show:
Perhaps it was his simplicity that allowed him to retire after beating everyone worth fighting. The pilot and his two passengers were instantly killed. Once, as a joke, the reigning sex symbol, Jayne Mansfield, was smuggled into a room where Marciano sat, alone. As a boy Rocco was preoccupied with his physical condition. Rocky didn’t trust banks, either, so he hid his cash: in the ground, inside toilet tanks, in light fixtures. He backed Walcott into the ropes. Pierino’s exposure to mustard gas during combat changed his life, but not his toughness. He was famous, successful, and well thought of.
The answer: Rocky Marciano, heavyweight boxing champion from 1952 to 1956, when at age thirty-three he retired with a perfect record (49-0, with 43 knockouts). And he could be incredibly tight with a buck. The 1963 issue of Boxing Illustrated claimed: “Marciano’s knockout blow packs more explosive energy than an armour-piercing bullet and represents as much energy as would be required to spot lift 1000 pounds one foot off the ground.” Although this sort of ‘science’ was probably conducted by zealous Marciano fans, it is undeniably true that Rocky hit really hard.)
“In this age of the anti-hero and the non-hero, Rocky Marciano was the hero with whom the mass of Americans could readily identify, the hero who surmounted all difficulties by dint of hard work, dedication and perseverance. Rocky slowly became a better boxer, but it was his punching power that kept him undefeated. He had no boxing skills. He even used a coat hanger to stuff money inside curtain rods.
Lena prayed to St. His parents loved opera, ate Italian food, and had wine with dinner. Lena’s doctor said she could have no more children; this put a fine edge on her concern for Rocco’s health.
Marciano’s determination in the Walcott fight showed the world the new champion’s character and personality. His fanaticism about physical conditioning, along with his determination and punching power, led to an unequalled record for a heavyweight champion: forty-nine professional wins, no defeats, forty-three victories by knockout. Equally unique, Marciano never came out of retirement to challenge subsequent champions, a temptation very few ex-champions have overcome, much less succeeded at.
Marchegiano went to New York and met Al Weill, a boxing manager who tried to Americanize his name. The computer’s result: Marciano knocked out Ali in the thirteenth round. He even had a role in a movie. Sometimes he would cover his chin and hands with St. Stallone credited Chuck Wepner’s losing effort in a fight with Muhammed Ali as the inspiration for the film, yet the similarities of Rocky Balboa to Rocky Marciano are numerous and obvious.
Marciano was “a kind and decent man.”, He was “inherently a decent, righteous and truly wonderful guy…His innate decency and wholesomeness shine through in a dedicated glow.” Or: “We never cease to be amazed at the humility of Rocky Marciano…he treats everyone if they were the celebrity and he the awed little guy.” Another writer called him “probably the humblest of heavyweight champions.” Said another: “He reminds you of a great, friendly collie …with the grin of a shy fellow happy to be recognized, at last, as a member of the gang in good standing.” He was “the gentlest athlete I have ever known,” and again: “a man of simplicity and sincerity.”
On August 31, 1969, Marciano planned to interrupt his business circuit and fly back to Florida to celebrate his forty-sixth birthday with his family. Although he enjoyed being champion, Marciano remained unchanged. He didn’t trust lawyers or accountants, and preferred to deal in cash. They all lived in a two bedroom apartment. The famous sportswriter Jimmy Cannon observed that Marciano trained “like a man practicing a holy ritual.” Before fights he would slip away to a church or chapel to pray. At the time boxing was a diversion, a way to make a few bucks to help out his family. Rocco was in his twenties, when most fighters hit their peak
This is especially true for bettors interested in a more conservative approach.. We cover basic and advanced blackjack strategy and provide bettors tips on how to use basic card-counting skills to tip the scales in their favor. The game suffers from a little bit of a reputation problem, long associated with big spenders and big profits for the house. More often than not, the intent of the other guys is sales or advertisement.
Video Poker, the Advantage Gambler’s Favorite
Learning how to play video poker also means learning how to interpret features like game rules and pay tables. The luck of the draw is a big part of the game, but knowledge about the statistical likelihood of drawing certain hands plays a huge part as well.
Broadly-speaking, two categories of casino advice exist on the Internet: one category includes fact-based strategy guides and listicles on a variety of gambling topics, the other is completely worthless. Roulette props are memorable, especially when the game is played on ornate wheels in the bigger European casinos or in the center of dozens of busy tables on a Las Vegas gaming floor. Any slot machine advice that suggests there is some method for beating a machine or finding one that’s “hot” or “due” for a jackpot is garbage – slot player strategy means controlling your money and knowing how to bet. Other games in the casino give players a better statistical chance at winning money or breaking even, but big returns aren’t why people play slots.
In some parts of the world, baccarat is becoming rare, though it is still a very popular choice in Europe and parts of Asia. Our slot machine advice includes this useful and unbiased advice, as well as other strategies to make playing slots more fun, such as how to get freebies from casinos and tips for finding slot machines that suit different playing styles.
The Mythical (and Magical) Game of Blackjack
Along with the spinning roulette wheel, the rolling dice used in games of craps are the major icons of casino play around the world. However, other wagers are among the more advantageous wagers gamblers will find. Slots are the casino equivalent of games like Candy Crush or Angry Birds.
There’s something that can’t be avoided when discussing roulette strategy – many of this game’s bets offer odds so bad they should be the domain of the very stupid or the very wealthy. The house edge on the bets known as “banker” and “player” is between 1 and 1.5% (in a game played with standard casino rules). Despite a reputation as a complex and expensive gamble, craps is really a misunderstood luck-based dice game with a few decent wagers and a lot of entertainment value.
The trouble many gamblers have with craps is the complex betting surface – even roulette, with its dozens of numbers, different colors and combinations, and rapid spins of the wheel, doesn’t confuse gamblers the way a craps surface can. Let us show you how to play it smarter, or at least enjoy your play a little more.
Since roulette is a fully luck-based game, we list it here, just one rung up from slot machines. Because of its fast pace and the likelihood of plenty of ups and downs for the player, baccarat is the title of choice for thrill seekers and aggressive gamblers.
Craps, the Misunderstood Casino Standby
The Zeus Slot Machine – Gambling at Its Finest
Based on the rules of draw poker, video poker involves a bettor making choices in order to form the highest-value poker hand possible from the cards they’re dealt. Ignore the itch that suggests slots are low-class games. This game is a favorite among our writers, and we believe our advice regarding video poker play is easy-to-read and even easier to put into practice.
It may seem strange, then, that this game offers wagers that come with among the best odds in casino play. The difference between the two is intent. That is far from the truth – because video poker involves a huge skill element on the part of the player, it is not only one of the most fun machine games available, certain versions of the game can be played at a positive expectation. That means some video poker players actually hold an advantage over the casino. The excitement around a craps table comes from the fact that players can wager both for and against one another, the high likelihood of winning and losing streaks, and the large bets placed by some craps bettors interested in the sometimes quick pace of the game.
The purpose of advice is to share what one knows about a topic with someone who expects to encounter that subject in the future. To these people’s way of thinking, gambling is a zero-sum game in which a casino presents rigged games designed to take customer’s money. Forget that the potential for losing is so high that gambling jurisdictions require game programming that guarantees a minimum return. Because of the game’s simple rules and pay table, it is easy to learn and can be played with strategy, though like other luck-based games the best tactics involve bankroll management and increasing entertainment value rather than finding a way to beat the house.
Like the other gambles covered in more detail throughout our site, our roulette section includes everything from tips on which bets to make and which to avoid all the way to money management tactics and etiquette advice. We humans are captivated by shiny things, and the bouncing silver ball of roulette is the perfect prop to keep gamblers in thrall.
Because video poker machines are often banked alongside slots, gamblers unfamiliar with how these games work may assume they’re something like slots – simplistic, sucker bets with a high casino advantage. Roulette may not have the global appeal of slots, but any gambler who spends five minutes at a live roulette game will understand its addictive qualities. Rather than relying on the same old recycled “how to beat the casino” advice found everywhere else, trust us to share what we’ve learned about gambling in a way that’s both comprehensive and easy to apply.
Whether it’s called chemin de fer, punto banco, or plain old baccarat, this card game is designed for and usually played by high-rollers. After all, baccarat is the game of James Bond, a game with small advantages that can result in massive wins and losses. The most basic piece of advice any new roulette player needs to learn is to seek out and always play on European-style wheels rather than American-style. Beating the house consistently at the game sometimes called 21 requires serious study. Our strategy for roulette considers both players who like risk and those looking to stretch their bankroll as far as it will go. Learning the meanings of craps jargon as well as the odds and value of the game’s many different ways to wager is a huge first step in the direction of learning craps strategy, and we offer this advice free of charge and without bias.
Since slot machines are pleasurable games based on luck, strategy for slots revolves around increasing the value of money spent on them and stretch a slot player’s budget to give them the most entertainment for their bankroll. Euro wheels have a single green “0″ space, American wheels have the additional “00.” The addition of a single potential winning number changes the game’s odds dramatically enough that choosing an American wheel when a Euro game is available is downright stupid. Roulette is one of those classic casino contests that everyone can picture, one that most people probably picture when they imagine a casino floor. While casino games are designed to turn a profit for their operators, there is no difference between an hour at a slot machine and an hour at the local movie theater – except that at the end of the hour, a slot machine could potentially put more money in your pocket. Even though baccarat involves plenty of risk for the bettor, our strategy advice can make the game more fun and even help bettors decide how to wager to maximize the value of their bankroll.
Forget that some slot machines give the player terrible odds. This may not matter as much to a slots player who is looking to stretch their $50 or $100 for a long period of time – for that sort of player, sound strategy would involve finding a machine they enjoy and placing wagers that won’t dry up their bankroll too quickly.
Gambling is just another form of entertainment, albeit one that’s highly-regulated, potentially profitable for participants, and carries a long cultural tradition in many parts of the world. Some game’s pay tables are tilted in favor of the house, while others favor players – reading these tables and finding games that benefit players a little more is another important aspect of video poker strategy. The writers here at GamblingAdvice.org have played every casino game under the sun and can offer tips to make these games more enjoyable and (maybe) more lucrative. Slots players interested in slightly higher odds of winning are advised to always bet the maximum amount available; the larger a player’s price-per-pull, the better the odds of winning become, and the larger the jackpots become as well. Whether that effect is an increased chance of winning at the blackjack table or the stretching of a budget to increase time in front of a slot machine, we offer advice to help gamblers achieve it.
The Simple Pleasures of Slot Machines
Because craps is one of the faster-paced games on this list, newcomers to the game are encouraged to learn as much about it as they can – this includes advice on how to control wagers to extend playing time and fact-based tips on the game’s best and worst bets, odds-wise. We at GamblingAdvice.org want to make gamblers time playing their chosen game more entertaining. Because roulette offers both very conservative and very aggressive wagering options, strategy is important for bettors who want to leave the casino with their rent money safely tucked away.
Another casino game standard-bearer, blackjack today has a well-known reputation as a beatable casino contest, thanks in no small part to card-counting teams glamorized in popular culture over the past couple of decades. The gameplay is addictive, the modern video clips and other special effects give slots a video game-like atmosphere, and players can fully participate without thinking much at all. That’s the definition of strategy, after all – a set of tactics meant to produce a specific effect. Advantage gamblers, pay attention.
Like slots, the luck-based action of roulette is fun as any game on any casino floor. The reason this kind of game is the most popular anywhere in the world is because it is a lot of fun to play.
All casino games (even totally luck-based contests like slots or roulette) can be played in different ways to achieve different results. Though these six titles are the most popular among casino gamblers, they are by no means the only ones we cover at GamblingAdvice.org, but a representative sample of what we offer bettors looking to have more fun at the casino.
Learning to establish a slot budget isn’t difficult, and bankroll management can be scaled up and down to meet any wallet size. Rather than focusing on beating the house consistently, gamblers interested in blackjack strategy can focus instead on the tips we provide to make the game more fun and (just a little bit) better odds-wise.
Roulette: Devil’s Wheel or Safe Bet?
To some people, the notion of “gambling advice” is oxymoronic. If, as Merriam-Webster says, “advice” means any recommendation about a future action, “gambling advice” is nothing but tips to help gamblers have more fun in the future.
The Quick Ups and Downs of Baccarat
There is no skill element in the basic slot machine game, though bonus rounds and additional features in modern slots give them a skill-based element. Yes, blackjack is beatable, but bettors looking for easy money should look elsewhere. Unfortunately, the amount of truly helpful material is overshadowed by a mountain of bad “gambling strategy” that’s usually nothing more than a rehashed set of myths that’s been around for decades. Similar to video poker, blackjack is a card game that involves both a skill and a luck element. The cards that appear for the player and the house are not something a bettor can work around – what they can do is play the game a certain way to maximize their chances of winning.
Blackjack strategy, as developed by math geniuses in the middle of the 20th century, is a sure-fire way to decrease the house’s advantage. Though all video poker is based on simple draw poker rules, different titles include wrinkles like wild cards or additional cards beyond the standard 5-count, and these small changes impact strategy in a big way. Generally, the outcome of a round of slot play is based on luck. The same can’t be said for the latest Hollywood blockbuster.
Below are short breakdowns about our guides to the most popular casino games, listed in increasing order of game complexity
Pols of TIME: “The main reason to see ‘Arbitrage’ is Gere, whose steady improvement with age (he just turned 63) is not remarked upon enough.”

Christy Lemmire of The Associated Press: “Gere is so charming, so irresistible when he’s on top of the world – when he’s got all those plates humming in unison – that he kind of makes you root for his character to get away with it all.”
But not everyone agrees. He ends up making a mistake that forces him to turn to an unlikely person for help. Gere, allow me to apply a little buzzicidal ointment. The New York Post’s Klye Smith wrote, “And as for that so-called Oscar buzz for Mr. He’s the film’s most deluxe item.”

Gere has attracted attention for his acting in the film, with Manohla Dargis of The New York Times noting, “Mr. But why grade on a curve? Every episode of ‘Law & Order’ I’ve ever seen has a more complicated and plausible plot, punchier dialogue and more New York authenticity, all in less than half the time consumed by this poky would-be finance thriller.”

See what else critics are saying:
(CBS News) Richard Gere is back in the shoes of an investor powerhouse, portraying fictional New York hedge fund magnate Robert Miller in “Arbitrage,” which hits theaters today. Clint Eastwood’s chair has a better shot at an Oscar nomination.”
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone: “Richard Gere’s performance in the sinfully entertaining ‘Arbitrage’ is too good to ignore…he is at the peak of his powers.”
Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun-Times: “Hitchcock called his most familiar subject ‘The Innocent Man Wrongly Accused.’ Jarecki pumps up the pressure here by giving us a Guilty Man Accurately Accused, and that’s what makes the film so ingeniously involving.”
The critics have chimed in on the new Nicholas Jarecki-directed film, with Rotten Tomatoes giving “Arbitrage” a very respectable 81 percent rating. Kyle Smith of The New York Post gave it 2 out of 4 stars: “‘Arbitrage’ is a decent enough way to spend your time compared to, say, waiting on line at the grocery story
On the other hand, a put option gives the buyer the right but not the obligation to sell a certain asset at an agreed price (strike price) by a certain date in the future. Be careful and ask all the right questions before you bring out the cash.
Since most of them involve the play of big money with very little in the way of initial investment, most people fail to foresee the impact they can have on their total funds. In a put option, the option will thus, only be exercised if the strike price is higher than the going market price at that specific point of time in the future. Since it is the ‘right but not the obligation’ to buy an asset, it is obvious that the call option will only be exercised if the strike price is lower than the going market price for the underlying asset at that certain time in the future. The only difference between a normal spot transaction and a forward transaction is the time span between the contract and its fulfillment. They offer the trader, the option of passing on some of the risk that he’s bearing over to another party. Inexperienced options expire once their time duration ends and it is only the premium paid for buying the option that exchanges hands between the two parties.
Understanding Futures and Options. On the other hand, with a short position (agreement to sell), your payoff will be the differential between the spot price of the commodity then and the futures price that you have agreed on (S – F).
Certain exotic types like Cacall, Caput, Barrier options, etc., lure investors with the greed of returns, but what happens many a time is that, traders fail to see the complexity involved in them. Futures are also agreements to buy or sell commodities at a certain predetermined price at some predetermined time in the future. Last but not the least, they lend monetary power to the traders, for they can take large positions in the stock market with the minimal amount of cash, i.e., by just paying the premium amounts.
Uses in Investment Finance
Mastering these instruments can make you a millionaire overnight, but it is good to understand them first. If you wish to play the stock markets, they offer an unbelievable amount of ground to play in, especially when it comes to hedging and risk management. Plain vanilla swaps, or the least complicated of swaps, allow two parties to swap their interest obligations. When you hold a long position in a forward contract, i.e., you have agreed to buy the underlying commodity at the agreed price, your payoff will be the differential between the forward price and the spot rate at that point in the future (F – S). On the other hand, forwards, swaps, and CDS are usually traded on the over-the-counter (OTC) markets. These are normal financial instruments where you just buy or sell shares of company XYZ (for $20 each, if market value equals the intrinsic value). Lack of knowledge coupled with greed, turn them into your worst possible nightmare. There is no monetary transaction to the contract when it is first negotiated, and money only changes hands on contract maturity. Here’s and example of an underlying asset.
Futures contracts are derivatives very similar to forward contracts, with the main difference being that while forwards are traded OTC, futures are traded on an exchange. For example, if a party has a fixed rate payment obligation and another one has a floating rate one, the two can swap their interest obligations with each other without settling the underlying debt.
They are very good risk management tools and are mainly used to hedge risks that a trader is routinely exposed to. Options are fantastic in their ability to cater to every possible need of the stock market trader. Futures and options trading is fantastic as a risk reducing measure (hedging), but may not be equally fantastic as a speculative bet, especially when you do not have the required expertise, neither in derivatives nor in forecasting.
Below are some of the uses as listed by John C. He either takes on another risk in return or makes a cash payment in exchange for the risk transfer.
Instruments like forwards and futures play a key role in giving directions to the market prices of the future. By definition, they are financial instruments that derive their intrinsic values from the underlying asset that they are based on. But before you start thinking about having bigger yields out of these instruments, know a little more about them. The intention is to buy low and sell high in two different markets and pocket the differential profits.
They allow for large portfolio position changes without incurring the buying and selling transaction costs.
Forwards Contracts and Futures Contracts
By definition, a forwards contract is ‘an agreement to buy or sell an asset for a predetermined, fixed price, at a certain time or date in the future’. They can be used to hedge open positions in stocks and this makes stock trading safer. While most financial assets have intrinsic asset values or prices, the intrinsic value of a derivative is based on the financial asset that forms the basis of a derivatives contract. Hull in his 1999 book titled ‘Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives’.
They are simple financial instruments. Shares of company XYZ have an intrinsic value of $20 each. While spot is an immediate, present tense contract, a forward is a later date or future tense contract that is just being finalized today. These are extremely powerful instruments and though, ‘no guts no glory’ does summarize the ‘higher risk, higher potential return’ mantra of investment finance; having open positions in them is never prudent. Marginal swings in the value of these shares can leave you with the outcome – ‘Investment – $100 and Total Loss $100, 000′. Options are not limited to the exchange traded derivatives markets and some are also traded on the OTC markets.
Interest rate swaps are also derivatives for they too derive their values from the underlying debt instrument. So for once, a financial instrument has been named correctly, an instrument that derives its value from some other asset is termed as a derivative.
These markets happen to be of two types. Think about it and you’ll know why so many have gone down while betting on these instruments. Know their uses and advantages, their drawbacks as well as their various types, namely forwards, swaps, futures and options.
What is the Derivatives Market?
Options are basically of two types, a call option and a put option. These non-standardized financial instruments bear some amount of credit risk, since no exchange interferes between the buyer and the seller. The only difference between them and the normal financial instruments (like shares), is just the little term called ‘underlying asset’. Even though you have invested only $100, the position that you had taken in the market was on $10000 shares. When investing in these instruments, be aware of the risk that you are taking on with that kind of leverage.
When they are used for hedging, they perform exceptionally well but when used for speculation, it is not prudent to rely too heavily on them. First the futures and options are traded on the exchange traded derivatives market and are standardized instruments with negligible credit risk. Many an investor have fallen to greed in this market, for everyone else, it is a risk management boon.
Whether futures and options, or swaps and forwards, all require careful and deliberate study. Two or more options can be combined together (synthetic options) to give the trader just the kind of payoff he was visualizing, given his forecasts of the future price movements on the stock exchange. Not understanding how they work and investing large sums of money in them blindly is a folly. Being traded on exchanges robs the futures of the customization that is available on forwards, but on the other hand, as exchanges play clearing houses in the transaction, futures have relatively lower credit risk.
A point to note here is that, while futures and forwards are obligatory buy and sell contracts for the holders, options are rights and not obligations that the holder can choose on whether to exercise or not. You’ll know then, why all traders haven’t mastered the art yet and become overnight millionaires. For many of these instruments, small changes in the underlying asset can swing your fortunes from millionaire to bankrupt within seconds. The value of your option to either buy or sell the shares of this company, derives its value from the actual market prices of the underlying asset, in this case, the shares of company XYZ. How else is it possible that just investing $10 should help you take positions worth $1000. Research them and you will find a very grim picture, more houses have been broken with these instruments than have been built. A call option gives the buyer the right but not the obligation to buy a certain asset from the call option writer, by a certain date and for a certain price, known as the strike price. Forwards and futures prices are good reflectors of the price directions as well as the expected change in the future prices of the underlying asset.
